Running a childcare center goes way beyond business—it’s about nurturing young minds and giving parents peace of mind. At Growing Minds Early Learning Center, Melissa Holt has created a warm, welcoming environment where kids can thrive and feel right at home. 

From Passion to Reality 

After working in child care for over 16 years, Melissa’s dream took shape during the pandemic, when she was a new mom to her infant son. With help from the Child Care Business Lab, Melissa decided to take the leap and open her own, thriving center where parents feel confident, and children are free to be children. “I wanted to create a place where kiddos can be themselves,” she says. And that’s exactly what she’s done. 

Challenges and Triumphs 

One of the toughest hurdles in her journey? Staffing. “It’s always been about finding the right people. I won’t settle for less, because our children deserve passionate, dedicated caregivers,” Melissa said. She now leads a solid team of 26 staff members who share her vision. 

But it’s not all challenges—this center’s rapid growth is a testament to its success. Opening in 2022 with just 19 children, it now enrolls 75, expanding from four staff members to 26. This swift success even surprised Melissa: “I knew we’d be popular, but I never imagined us growing this quickly!” 

Looking Ahead 

In the next three to five years, the focus is on refining and expanding. “I want to open more centers when the timing is right. But for now, it’s about making sure our current operations are smooth and consistent.” 

Advice for Aspiring Childcare Owners 

“Don’t give up,” she advises to those dreaming of opening their own childcare centers. “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Take your time, be patient, and don’t lose sight of your dreams.”
